A Student Nurses Experience of Working Flexibly at BelleVie
At BelleVie, we know how important it is to offer flexible opportunities for people who want to make a difference while also focusing on their future career. Recently one of our long term team members, Holly, left us having graduated and moved into her first full time nursing role. Holly worked with us on a flexible contract while completing a nursing degree, and she shared how the experience of working for BelleVie supported her studies and professional growth.
Why did you apply to work for BelleVie?
I applied to BelleVie to get hands-on experience of care in an environment outside of the hospital. I wanted to broaden my perspective of healthcare and
strengthen my CV with practical care giving experience. I also wanted to work flexibly while studying and this role offered flexible hours that I could fit around my classes and placements.
How did the role help with your training?
I was able to build on my communication skills. Working closely with people in their homes sharpens your ability to connect, listen and communicate. I found it helped my understanding of providing holistic care as I saw firsthand how important independence and daily living activities are to health and wellbeing. Working independently is great for learning responsibility, time-management and decision-making skills. I also appreciated the exposure to the social and environmental factorsthat influence health.
How did you balance your studies with work?
I had a flexi-role so that I did not feel stressed with my constantly changing timetable because I did not have set days or expectations. If I couldn’t work a particular week because my workload was higher, that was ok. And conversely, during the breaks, I could work more. It was helpful having a job that could fit in to my learning commitments so easily.
Any advice for others thinking of working whilst training?
I would definitely recommend this role if you are training as it can give you the wider-picture of what a patient may be dealing with outside of the clinical environment which is very beneficial for your experience. It will also build your confidence in providing care and support to make your placements feel less daunting and the transition to your professional role easier.
What did you enjoy most about working at BelleVie and your role?
I felt I could directly improve someone’s quality of life, helping them to stay independent and comfortable in their own home. I was able to develop bonds with the people I cared for. I enjoyed knowing my work matters and seeing the positive impact, which gives a strong sense of fulfilment.
At BelleVie, we’re proud to support future healthcare professionals by offering flexible, hands-on roles that work alongside their studies, building skills and confidence.
